Heres the thing. Getting your C-6 California Contractors License can be hard. But it doesn’t have to be. All it takes is some studying. And some waffles. Every good California Contractor has waffles.
Good news. Jesus was a carpenter. And He’s some good news. Everyone needs some more good news. Just like California needs more carpenters. So get your license, be like Jesus, and spread some good news.
What is C-6 Cabinetry, Millwork, and Finish Carpentry?
Like Leonardo cabinetry is an art. Screws, joints, and drawers are your tools. Wood your canvas. With this license it allows you to create beautiful pieces of art (and charge fair prices) without fear of being caught by OSHA.
Here’s an exert straight from the CSLB on what a C-6 California Contractors License can do/make.
cabinets, cases, sashes, doors, trims, nonbearing partitions and other items of “finish carpentry” by cutting, surfacing, joining, gluing and fabricating wood or other products to provide a functional surface. This contractor also places, erects, and finishes such cabinets and millwork in structures.
California State License Board
Now that we got that out of the way. Here’s three steps to getting your license.
Step 1: Meet the requirements
Before you even dream of getting your license you must first meet the requirements.
- Must be over 18 years old.
- Have 4 years of working experience.
- Have a valid SSN or ITIN.
Pretty simple right? YES.
Those three things holding you back from getting your license (when it comes to past records, as long as you are not on active parole you are eligible). Chances are you have more than 4 years of experience. But say you’re still working on it you can substitute that time with degrees and training programs. All that being said, California wants you to get your license. The state and Contractor License School (that’s us) are willing to work with you. Reach out if you have any further questions.
Step 2: Prepare
Preparing for your contractors’ license can look like many different things. When Sylvester Stalone was getting his license he did 12×15 dragonflies.
Of course, you may not be the Italian Stallion himself and that’s ok. That’s why there are schools to help. Schools like us.
We provide all the materials necessary to make sure you not only pass those exams but succeed. Oh, that’s right. I forgot to mention the tests.
In order to get your license you must pass 2 exams.
1- A test written by lawyers on contract law, liens, bonds, taxes, etc.
2- A trade test on your exclusive trade (C-6 Cabinetry, Millwork and Finish Carpentry)
That might seem like a lot, but by the time you get through the course you’ll be more than ready.
Step 3: Test day for C-6 California Contractors License
If you’ve made it through step 1 and 2 then you’re ready for step 3. By this time it has usually been 1-2 months.
In order for the CSLB to make a folder in your name and verify your experience you must send the application (provided upon enrollment). We assist you in filling out the application to make sure everything is correct.
From there it’ll take the CSLB 4-8 weeks to receive a test date.
From your email, you’ll choose a location and time to test and the rest is history.
Once you pass, you’ll have your C-6 California Contractors License.
There are a few details you must consider for your business setup such as whether you want to be a corporation or sole proprietor.
We recommend S Corps because they’re the best for California Contractors.
Why not get the License?
Why not achieve massive success?
Why not become free?
Couldn’t tell ya.
But I did just tell you how you can get your license.
And that’s like the same thing.
Bonus tip:
If you choose to start a business. Be thinking of the details as you get started.
Things like corporation, website, branding, etc.
