Hello, everyone! Allen here from the Contractor License School. Today, I’m answering the common question: How do you get your contractor’s license in California? The process is straightforward, and I’ll walk you through the key steps and requirements.
1. Experience Requirements
To qualify for a contractor’s license in California, you need four years of journeyman-level experience. However, your college education can count towards this requirement:
- Associate’s Degree (AA): Reduces the experience requirement by one year.
- Bachelor’s Degree: Reduces the requirement by two years.
- Master’s Degree: Reduces the requirement by three years.
If you don’t have a degree, gaining experience is straightforward—just work for a construction company to build up your time.
2. Age Requirement
You must be at least 18 years old to apply for a contractor’s license. However, be prepared to explain how you gained four years of experience by 18. For example, one person started working at 12, helping their family in construction. While starting young is great, you may want to wait until you’re 21 or 22 to apply, making it easier to meet the experience requirement without raising red flags.
3. Social Security Number or ITIN
You must have a valid Social Security Number (SSN) or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN). For those not legally residing in California, attaching yourself to a corporation can be an option. Foreigners can be part of a C corporation, which is something we can assist with.
Additional Considerations
For Felons and Individuals with Criminal Records: If you have a felony or misdemeanor but have paid your dues to the state, you can still obtain a contractor’s license. As long as you have completed your time and any required restitution, you are eligible.
