How To Get Your D-63 Contractors License

Time to get the beloved contractor license.

But how do you get your contractor license?

WHAT YOU NEED TO GET YOUR D-63 LICENSE

 Getting the D-63 Contractor License is much easier than you think. 

In fact it’s much easier than everyone thinks.

I’m even suprising myself writing this right now. 

There’s only three requirements:

1. Must have 4 years of experience doing D-63 work

2. Must be over 18

3. Must have a valid SSN or ITIN

PASS A STATE TEST

Ok so we made it through the requirements. 

Now are you ready for the meat and potatoes of getting your license. 

You must pass a Law and Business exam. 

Not I don’t want to sugar coat it. (I only sugar coat my pies.) This is a hard test.  

Chances are if you took it right now you would fail. Now I don’t say that to scare you, only to warn you. 

The test was written by lawyers so it’s no joke. You need to have an understanding of contract law, bonds, liens, taxes etc. in order to pass. 

But what do you do when you need to pass any test?

You go to school…

Here at the contractor school we prepare you to take this exam. 

So much we even quarantee you can pass this exam. 

And if you don’t… Well I don’t know what we’ll do because that’s never happened…. But I suspect we’ll pay for your retake. 

Here’s how we do it:

1. Homestudy – Where you teach yourself using different books, videos and online materials. 
2. Online – Tune into our live classes and participate online. 
3. In Class – Join one of our schools for in person lessons and attention. 

Through any of our courses you’ll be able to get your license. Simple. But it all depends on how you study best. Maybe you prefer reading on your own or maybe you prefer being a classroom setting in person. It’s all the same content in different ways.

How do you verify your experience?

How long does it take?

We recommend you send your application (signed by a contractor) to the CSLB (through the mail) after you complete the course (about 1 month in). 

This keeps you on a normal timeline to get your license as fast as possible. Your enrollment lasts for 6 months so you have plenty of time just in case life happens. 

In total you’re looking at 3 months from beginning to end to get your license. 

What’s the best business entity?

Simple. S Corps. (the S stands for smile 🙂

They give you the most protection and tax savings without having to pay for extra insurance. 

The Contract Bond

True this is important. And necessary. But only after you get you pass your test.

A construction cleanup contractor cleans up and/or removes from building grounds or structures any debris resultant from any construction project including but not limited to: concrete, dirt, scrap lumber, plaster, drywall, any paint or adhesive products from windows, floors, ceramic tile and bathroom fixtures.
