How To Get Your D-30 Contractors License

Getting your D-30 Contractor License is difficult.

Just like learning to ride a bike with no training wheels.

You may run into a trash can and break break your arm.

But that’s apart of the experience.

BUT WHAT DO YOU NEED TO GET YOUR LICENSE?

There are three things you need in order to get your Contractor License.

1. Must have 4 years of experience doing D-30 work

2. Must be over 18

3. Must have a valid SSN or ITIN

4. Tip your teachers with prime carne asada.

Ok that last one is a joke. But you do need the experience and that’s is the most important part.

For more clarification you can check out the CSLB’s website on experience requirements for the exam.

Once you have that the flood gates of opportunity open and you begin your contractor journey. Infact you’re already on the journey, you just need to make the perfect ending.

The next thing you need is to pass a state exam. Just like you were back in school. Except this will actually benefit you.

PASS A STATE TESTS

I will not lie. In fact I swore an oath to tell the truth and nothing but the truth.

And so this is the God offel truth.

The test is hard. So hard you would probably fail if you took it right now.

But that is why there are schools like us to help you out.

Well there are no schools like us, but there are schools who try to be as cool as us.

CONTRACTOR LICENSE SCHOOL

The only way to not pass your test is to not try at all. We won’t let you fail. But only you can will yourself to actually try.

Our contractor license courses are designed to give you the tools for success.

The test was written by lawyers and so we used lawyers to write our custom books and content.

Kinda like a fire fighting fire situation.

1. Homestudy – Where you teach yourself using different books, videos and online materials.
2. Online – Tune into our live classes and participate online.
3. In Class – Join one of our schools for in person lessons and attention.

The test covers everything from liens and bonds to contract law and taxes. You must be ready for it all. And must be ready to answer 125 questions of all.

Give us a call if you have any questions.

How do you verify your experience?

This was probably the second question that came to mind when you read you needed 4 years of experience.

The first was probably, ‘do I have 4 years of experience?’.

If the answer is yes then you have nothing to worry about.

Here is how you prove the experience in 5 steps:

1. Receive application (upon enrollment)

2. Fill out application (including your business information, personal information and favorite color (jk)

3. Get a D-30 contractor to sign your application (or one of the other 7 eligible people) This verifies the experience you have.

4. Submit and pass your test.

5. Celebrate with Carne Asada. (and some to share)

That’s it. If you worked for an employer they can sign off for you.

Maybe you were working illegally then try and get a client.

How long does it take?

You’re likely trying to get the license ASAP. Maybe your beinng threatened by legal actions and trying to get it quickly.

But that doesn’t mean it won’t take time.

The CSLB takes 4-8 weeks alone to process your application before scheduling the test date. Which you do as of late.

So yes you could get it done in a couple months.

3 is the average and is a good is a good timeline.

You want to be able to learn and be prepared for not just the test but also your business once you have your license.

What’s the best business entity?

Let me answer that in one letter and one word. S Corps.

S Corps are the best entity for contractors or all small businesses for that matter.

They give you all the protection necessary along with tax benefits.

LLCs are common and good but not as good as an S Corp.

That is why we recommend them to anyone getting their license.

If you’re curious for more. You can give us a call. This is also a topic we dive into with the course.

The Contract Bond

Yes. You need a bond.

Yes. You need it AFTER taking your exam.

It is easy to obtain. You can get it anywhere. Don’t worry.

How do I study??

Great question. In my professional opinion.

Practice tests are the best way to study.

There is a lot of science that goes into this but essentially what you want to do is simulate the conditions of testing. That way once you test for real you are more than prepared.

We are actively updating our practice tests with new information from previously passed students giving us feedback.

Finally

My last words to you are words of encouragement.

It’s time to get started.

I know I gave you a lot of information.

But the most important thing is taking the first step. The first step is always the hardest and will be the most rewarding.

Once you get started things will fall into place. But first get started.
