How To Get Your D-16 Contractors License

BUT WHAT ABOUT THE REQUIREMENTS?

 If you’ve made it this far you are probably pretty serious. 

I respect that. 

There are three requirements you must fulfill in order to be a contractor. 

1. Must have 4 years of experience doing D-16 work (raising floors) 

2. Must be over 18 

3. Must have a valid SSN or ITIN 

You probably read that and thought ‘what, that’s it?’ 

Yes. That’s it. 

And more importantly. You’re it.

PASS A STATE TESTS

We’ll I have all this experience. Best put it to good use. Makes sense right?

Chances are you have more than 4 years of experience. Maybe even 10 years. Maybe even 20. Nay I say 30 years of experience. 

But throw that out the window because in order to get your license you need to pass a ‘law and business’ exam.

How do you verify your experience?

Here’s the nitty gritty details. The ones I know you were thinking but probably too scared to raise your hand and ask. 

You verify your experience by filling out the glorious ORIGINAL CONTRACTOR APPLICATION. 

It’s a long form basically saying you are a person, you are a contractor, you are starting a busines (or being an RME – Resident Management Employee), and you have at least 4 years of experience. 

That last part is verified through a description of work (written by you) and a wet signature. That signature can be provided by a number of resources including but not limited to another D-16 contractor, employer, homeowner, etc. 

When the CSLB sees this they are going to think “wow this is a really good contractor who is experienced, prepared with an S Corp, and ready to get their contractor license. Let’s get this guy/girl a test date asap (rocky).”

Just like like. Well maybe not exactly. 

But you know what I mean. 

How long does it take?

Getting your license takes longer than making a perfect panini but less than the average Fallout 76 loading time. 

So what you’re looking at is about 3 months of dedication. It’s like buds. Except once a week for two hours. And you get plenty of sleep. And there’s no blood sweat or tears. 

So really it’s nothing like buds and everything like a contractor license school where you learn from an instructor once a week. Or online through the livestream.

We suggest you send your application one month into the course. That way as you wait the two months to hear back from the state to schedule your test you can still study and prepare without pushing it off to much. 

That is why we say 3 months. However life happens and we know that. It’s best to allow yourself some time to focus on preparing for the future. You’ll thank yourself and us later. 

What’s the best business entity?

S Corps. 

We cover this in the course so I won’t take too much time talking about it here. 

But the point you need to know is S Corps are perfect for contractors just like Tom Brady is perect for the Patriots. 

Bond, oh my?!

That’s right you need to get a bond. 

But just one so you don’t need to worry too much. 

 You can get them from a insurance provider. They’re not that expensive. At least compared to how much you’ll be making. 

But all these details are not imporant compared to what truly matters. Getting your license. Simply starting.
