How Long Does It Take To Get A Contractors License?

It takes anywhere from a month at the fastest (and that’s like mega-speed fast hardly-ever-happens nearly-impossible) to three or four months. Typically three or four months. It’s quite an involved process (there are a lot of factors and moving parts). It can seem daunting at first, but we break it down for you in our classes and make it easy as possible.

How Much Does It Cost?

This depends on what route you choose. We offer three schooling options: you can come to one of our classes or you can learn online or from home. Each option varies the price. Schooling can be anywhere from $699 to $1299. So, it doesn’t cost much. Not compared to a college education or a flat-screen TV (even on Black Friday).

Apart from schooling there are other fees associated with the state (testing fees and insurances). These range nearly up to a thousand dollars. So the entire process ends up near to $2,000. There are plenty of ways you can lower that cost. But, keep in mind, people (maybe even you) spend this amount of money on lottery tickets every year. Which is sad, because it would be better used if you invested in yourself.

Spending $2,000 today can reap you hundreds of thousands into the future as you establish your business and yourself in the construction industry.

Am I qualified?

You only need three things to be qualified to get your Contractors License in California:

1. Be 18 years old or older.

2. Be awesome (you are, by the way).

3. Have four years of experience doing construction. (If you have a bachelor’s degree you only need two years of experience).

4. Have a valid social security number or ITIN number.

That’s it. I know I said three things. But then I improvised. It happens.

How Will The State Know I Have Four Years of Experience?

You have one or more people (you typically only need one) sign off on your application attesting to the fact that you have four years of experience.

Who Do I Get To Sign My Application?

You have a few options with this: an employer, a licensed contractor, someone you’ve worked for, someone you’ve worked with (if you have no one else) or even a client (if you’re claiming self-employed status).

What If I've Been Contracting Without A License?

Well then you definitely need to get enrolled in a school and start studying and get your license. You can get in major legal trouble for contracting without a license if you’re doing jobs for $500 or more. So, get enrolled. If all your experience comes from your own work (being self-employed), that’s okay. The state will accept your experience. So get started.
