How To Get Your C-9 Contractors License

Getting the C-9 Drywall license can seem like a daunting (and even a daring) process. Our job is to break down the process and make it as easy as possible for you from start to finish.

We’re not going to lie. Studying to pass the tests is hard work. But we try to make the classes as fun and engaging as possible.

What do you need?

For you, there are 3 requirements.

1. Four years of experience working in the C-9 drywall trade.

(either working for someone or self-employed).

2. You must be at least 18 years old.

3. You must have a valid social security or ITIN number.

STATE TESTING.

You have to pass two main tests with the state of California — you do it through CSLB (Contractors State License Board). Once you pass these tests (and do a few other things — like getting a Contractors Bond and a LiveScan — simple things that you don’t need to worry about just yet) CSLB will issue you your license and you can get to work being your own boss.

But you must pass the tests.

A trade test – covering topics related to drywall work.

And a law test – covering difficult topics dealing with the law.

PRACTICE TESTS.

We provide you with hundreds of practice test questions so that you will be fully ready for the state tests. We can’t give you the state’s exact questions but, if you pass our tests, you’ll be able to pass the state tests.

It really is as simple as that.

Depends on your definition of the word easy. For me, easy means “runny eggs.” But it might mean something entirely different to you.

Verifying Your Experience.

We know, we know.

In your head, you’re asking — but how do I prove I have the necessary four years of experience?

It’s easy as this: you have to get one person to sign off on your application verifying you have the necessary experience. Usually this person would be an employer or a fellow employee or even a client if you’re claiming the status of self-employed.

A drywall contractor lays out and installs gypsum wall board and gypsum wall board assemblies including nonstructural metal framing members, and performs the taping and texturing operations including the application of compounds that adhere to wall board to produce a continuous smooth or textured surface.
