How To Get Your C-10 Contractors License

To get your electrical contractors license the MAIN REQUIREMENT is that you have minimum four years of journeyman-level experience (this means you were either doing or supervising the work) in the trade.

How do you prove you have the four years of experience?

In order to prove you have the necessary experience you must have at least one person sign off on the application (we’ll help you fill it out correctly) that you will submit to the state VERIFYING that you have the 4 years.

This person would usually be your employer — either current or former — or a fellow employee or a licensed contractor who can attest to the fact that you have the experience.

If you’re currently self-employed you can get a signature from a client.

Of course, if you are currently self-employed you definitely need to get your license because it is very illegal to contract without a license — unless you’re doing work under $500 a job. In which case you’re making almost no money.

It’s always better to get the license than end up with fines or jailtime.

If you’ve been operating self-employed the state will count that towards your experience and you can put that down on your application. They just want you to get your license.

You Must Pass Trade And Law Tests

To get your license, if you qualify and the state accepts your application, you have to pass a trade test — which will cover all things electrical — as well as a law test. The law test will cover all things construction law.

Both tests are difficult for most people.
